Zika Virus: Stay Safe This Summer

by / Friday, 20 May 2016 / Published in Blog

When we love the outdoors, we don’t let anything hold us back, including the Zika virus. Instead of avoiding the outdoors because of potential illnesses, Appalachian Outfitters believe in taking proactive steps to prevent contracting the Zika virus.

Confirmed Zika Cases in Ohio

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have reported that local mosquito-born Zika virus cases have been confirmed outside of the US. The Zika virus has been steadily spreading around the world. It began in Central and South America, and even though locally-transmitted cases have not yet been confirmed within the US, there have been cases of travelers returning to Ohio with Zika virus infections. As there are more travelers with the illness, it is becoming more likely for there to be local US cases. This means that it is crucial for outdoor enthusiasts to be mindful of how they enjoy nature.

Take Preventive Action This Summer

The CDC recommends removing any standing water where mosquitoes could breed. They also recommend two of the best ways to prevent contracting the virus: wearing insect repellent or clothing treated with insect repellent.

Use DEET To Stop Mosquitoes

Even though some people think that DEET does more harm than good, it is an effective insect repellent. It is available in a variety of forms that will help to deflect mosquitoes – in lotions, towelettes, sprays, liquids, roll-ons, and other options that are convenient for carrying on backpacking trips. Take these handy insect repellents with you to stay healthy all summer.

Wear BugsAway® and Insect Blocker™ For Your Health

There are also a variety of options in insect repellent clothing. Insect Shield clothing includes permethrin, which deters mosquitoes for up to 70 washes. It is a safe and effective alternative to insect repellent sprays. Two brands, Columbia and Exofficio, design stylish, practical outdoor clothing infused with insect repellent to keep you free of the Zika virus, including Insect Blocker™ and BugsAway®.
