It’s that perfect time of year for day hikes within the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, but are you properly geared-up for your hikes? At Appalachian Outfitters we have the perfect gear selection to outfit you for a successful hike within the CVNP.
#1. A Great Pair of Hiking Boots
Most importantly are a great pair of hiking boots! Whether it be a mid or low hiker, we have got you covered! One option would be the Oboz Bridger Mid BDry Shoe, this style is available in both Men’s and Women’s. This is a Mid Hiker that is waterproof with a lightweight aggressive outsole and is also available in wide.
Not a fan of mids? No problem! Go with a Low hiker instead. Keen Targhee EXP Low WP is a great option it’s waterproof breathable trail shoe based on the comfort of the original Targhee but with an updated design and an all-terrain outsole. Need a wide? Not a problem it’s available in wide! Hiking boots are just one part of the equation, they are nothing if they are not paired with the right pair of socks!
#2. A Pair of Merino Wool Socks
A perfect sock pairing would be a Merino Wool sock, it’s breathable and naturally resists odor. So, we suggest the Smartwool PHD Outdoor Medium Cushion Crew Socks. These socks are constructed in the USA with Smartwool’s Indestructawool technology that creates a great fit, comfort, and durability all wrapped together in one sock.
With the ever-changing weather in Ohio, a great pair of convertible hiking pants is a must-have. For men, a great option is the Kuhl Liberator Convertible Pant. This pant is constructed with Kuhl’s patented Drypoint Fabric that pulls moisture to the surface for quick-drying, it has a DWR finish, and a UPF of 40. Beyond this, the pants convert into a 10.5” short.
As for women, a great pant option is the Columbia Saturday Trail II Stretch Convertible Pant. This pant features Columbia’s Omni-Shield and Omni-Shade technology. This is a pant fit for the trail that helps you stay clean and dry as well as blocking UVA and UVB rays to help prevent sunburn. The pant zips off into a short option with a 10” inseam.
#4. Underwear
Next underwear. Yes, underwear! A quick-drying, breathable pant is nothing if paired with a pair of heavy cotton underwear. Since cotton is not ideal for the trail we suggest going with a pair of underwear from Exofficio Sport Mesh collection, which comes in a variety of styles for both men and women. This ultralight mesh is comfortable and works to form the perfect performance underwear that remains cool and fresh while you are out on the trail.

Being prepared for the rain can be the difference between a joyful hike and a miserable hike that is why we suggest the Marmot Precip Jacket. The Marmot Precip Jacket is a style for both men and women. It’s a fully waterproof shell perfect for day hikes in the park. This jacket is both waterproof and breathable with an attached adjustable hood that rolls into the collar, pit zits for more venting and breathability in muggy rainy weather, and for easy storage, it also stuffs into its own pocket!

A great option for women is the Exofficio BugsAway Damselfly Jacket featuring the Insect Shield technology. This Permethrin treated garment repels mosquitos, ticks, and much more. This treatment is good for the entire life of the garment. Also, for easy storage, it stuffs into its own security pocket.
For men, there is the Exofficio BugsAway Lumos Hoody also featuring the same Insect Shield technology as the women’s BugsAway Damselfly Jacket to keep bugs at arm’s length.
