The Story Behind The Beer

In 1997, “with a passion to make the best small batch hand crafted ales and lagers,” John Najeway and his associates started the Thirsty Dog Brewing Co. All the beers are brewed, fermented, bottled, and served on location at Thirsty Dog. It didn’t take long for their beers to earn numerous awards from both the Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Cups. The most recent award came from the New York International Beer Competition, they received USA Brewery of the Year 2014. These accomplishments haven’t eased their ambitions – they continue perfecting their recipes to brew even better pints with each batch.

Man’s Best Friend – Dogs and Beer

John Najeway informed us “the name comes from our love of dogs.” Optimus amicus hominus is Latin for “highest friend of man,” something that John believes to be true. In keeping this phrase as the company theme, the Thirsty Dog’s tagline is “unleash the flavor.” Continuing with this theme, they name their beers after various dog attributes. Some of their most popular beers include Old Leghumper, Labrador Lager, and the 12 Dogs of Christmas. Some of their beers even have interesting stories behind their names. Citra Dog, for example, is an American IPA-style beer. This particular drink features Lea, an American pit bull lab mix. Adam Stull (one of the former brewers) and Maddie Rogers (his girlfriend) rescued Lea.

Thirsty Dog Events

Cleveland Beer Week is later this month, and the Thirsty Dog will be present at several events, including a beer dinner at Tinkers Creek and another beer dinner at Crave in Akron. Thirsty Dog is also hosting two special events at the Thirsty Dog brewery itself; John Najeway informed us that these events are “to feature the release of our Christmas seasonal - 12 Dogs of Christmas” as well as raise awareness and funds for PAWSibilities Summit County Rescue for Animals and Medina County Rescue. These events take place October 25 and November 1 and 2.
