United By Blue’s MissionUnited By Blue promises to remove one pound of trash from oceans and waterways for every one item purchased. The company doesn’t send money to have others do their dirty work—They create cleanup events dedicated to removing anything from tires, plastic bottles, and appliances, to abandoned trucks, and anything in between. They remove whatever trash they can find on beaches or in streams, creeks, and rivers, making the natural world a better place for animals and people.

What Difference Does One Pound Make?
United By Blue’s trash removal promise as been a part of the company since the very first T-shirt they sold. That very week in 2010, United By Blue hosted its inaugural cleanup. Since that momentous week, the company has had 210 cleanups in 27 states. With each cleanup, the crew removes more and more trash, amounting to a total of 1,059,981 pounds as of today. Each pound makes a difference! Each year, 8 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean. A total of 1.5 million tons of plastic waste is from plastic bottles alone. As the trash builds up, it creates large, thick clouds of trash in the ocean’s currents, the largest being The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which is two times as big as Texas. Trash must be removed from the oceans—the damage is already affecting marine plant and animal life, and eventually, the negative effects will more noticeably reach people on land.
Better Than A Donation? The company’s goal is to create larger, more measurable changes in the oceans. Through their work, they hope to encourage people to care for the natural world similarly in their own lives. Organizing cleanups inspire people to see what a difference a single pound of trash can make.
Getting To the Source Of The ProblemUnited By Blue doesn’t just remove trash from oceans, it also stops trash from reaching the oceans in the first place. The company was established to prove that successful outdoor brands can do more than just sell clothes; they can take on significant conservation work. Outdoor products are made to help people enjoy nature, so it only makes sense that these same products should also treat the natural world respectfully. All materials are carefully considered and chosen with the cleanliness of the ocean, soil, and air in mind. These materials include recycled polyester, organic cotton, and wool.
