The Gransfors Bruk Large Splitting Axe can be used for splitting all types of firewood. It is forged and ground to a concave, quite thin blade at the bit. The axe cuts quickly and easily into the wood and then effectively splits it as the broader section pushes apart the wood. The handle has a protective steel collar below the axe head and circular grooves towards the end for an extra firm grip. The handle is available in two forms, a shorter and a longer version.

Splitting Axes should not be used for striking a wedge or as a wedge. Only the Gransfors Bruk Splitting Maul and Gransfors Bruk Splitting Wedge are designed for this.

My favorite splitting axe.

This axe will most likely do the bulk of the work depending on species. There are times when a maul or wedge is required, but I would much prefer to swing this axe and it punches above its weight in terms of splitting power.

Perfect choice for splitting axe

Very well crafted, perfect handle length (and I am not tall), split 6-8 inch logs with one strike, and only 2 or 3 for 12 inch rounds. Much less work than using a maul or wedges. I researched this choice thoroughly, very happy with my purchase. Excellent service from Appalachian Outfitters.

Gransfors Bruk large and long splitting axe

Beautiful axe; no doubt. The handle is straight; no curve. The 27.5 inch handle, I believe, has a curve. I thought this one did, too. Don't know what is different from the large splitter and large and long. Straight handles are the strongest. I split around 3 cords of oak and ash each year. And a couple basswood. Have been renting a power splitter for a week. Figured this would be more fun.

Gransfors Bruk Long and Large Splitting Axe

I am a 75 years old woman, 5"4", about 130#s and looked far and wide for the perfect fit to split wood for my primary source of heat. This is it. It took a few swings to get the hang of it but now I've got it down. Great exercise and a warm house. Great Axe and good customer service.

Worth the price

If you have wood to split this is the axe for you. Quality does make a difference. Don't hesitate. The cheeks of the axe do most of the work.
