The No.08 Carbon Steel pocket knife is the knife that started it all. Joseph Opinel first designed and patented the knife in 1890. A sensible choice

Sharp and easy to resharpen. A light carry, locks securely. I keep one in car, work area and kitchen drawer. It is carbon steel and will rust so take care of this fine piece it will serve you well,

Love it or Meh?

I've been wanting an Opinel forever just never got around to it. This knife is amazingly sharp with the quality carbon blade and i do admire the simplicity of the lightweight wooden handle. It's as simple as they get. Unfortunately, that simplified design causes the wood to swell and contract with fluctuations in temperature, more to the point dewpoint and humidity. This can make opening and closing the knife a PIA. Also, as these French blades, even though cheaply priced are sorely sought after, it would have been awesome to see an option for a case or some sheath holder to protect the knife and wooden handle when not in use. Overall I expected more from the Company who has been bumping out blades for over 100 years.

Oh the other knife was so insignificantly tiny i couldn't process it as a real blade. IT reminded me of one of those little derringer screwdrivers that comes with the hardware set on a piece of new furniture. Like it was made for the people of Lilliput. SO i just gave that to my father who uses it on his 1800s ship modeling project.

I'm not sure whether your question is how much of the blade is carbon steel, or how much carbon is in the steel. To answer the former, the blade is 100% carbon steel. As for the latter, high carbon steel is generally defined as having between 0.30% and 1.70% carbon by weight. Opinel uses XC90 for their carbon steel knives. XC90 will be between 0.85% and 0.95% carbon by weight.
